“We are deeply saddened by the passing of our friend and Trustee, John Padget. John was a true believer in the power of education to change lives, and he spent much of his life devoted to this belief in Monroe County.

“He brought Take Stock in Children to the Florida Keys, opening the door for many thousands of students to have a mentor and access to college scholarships. As superintendent of Monroe County Public Schools, he led with a clear and disciplined vision. As a member and vice chairman of the State Board of Education, he championed high standards for all students throughout Florida.

“John Padget shared our belief in the potential of every student, and we are deeply grateful for his life’s work, which profoundly touched so many lives.

“We extend our condolences to his loved ones and to the Key West community he cherished. His legacy will live on in the students he mentored, the scholarships he made possible and the reforms he championed.”
