News & Views / Florida Lawmakers Pass Most Expansive Parental Choice Bill in the Nation
“The Florida Legislature has firmly established the Sunshine State as first in the nation for school choice. Under Speaker Paul Renner and President Kathleen Passidomo’s leadership, Florida has created the most expansive parental choice program in the country – one that boldly prioritizes millions of students over outdated systems, unlocks options for all families, ends the frustration of waitlists and empowers parents to make decisions based on their child’s unique learning needs, regardless of their income or zip code.
“I applaud Speaker Renner, President Passidomo, Rep. Kaylee Tuck, Sen. Corey Simon and the members of the Florida Legislature for their extraordinary leadership and relentless commitment to Florida’s students and families.”
HB1:
- Creates universal empowerment scholarship accounts and extends school choice eligibility to all 2.9 million K-12 students.
- Eliminates the scholarship waiting list for thousands of students with unique abilities.
- Creates an online portal for families to explore Florida’s school choice programs.
- Establishes a pathway for reducing regulations on public schools based on the input of schools, districts, superintendents, teachers and others.
- Creates a new personalized education program that gives 20,000 homeschooling families the ability to customize their child’s education experience using an education scholarship. The cap on the program increases every year until 2027 when it will be removed.
