State Board of Education Intervenes on Behalf of Thousands of Hillsborough Students

Fighting to Ensure Charter School Options Remain Available to Local Students

Statement from Patricia Levesque, Executive Director of the Foundation for Florida’s Future, on today’s unanimous vote by the State Board of Education to protect Hillsborough County students by finding the local board’s decision to close four public charter schools was illegal.

“Today’s intervention by the State Board of Education rightfully puts students first by seeking to allow them to continue learning in a school they chose to attend rather than where they were geographically assigned.

“Even in the face of pressure, elected officials must always choose to put students above politics and self-interest. We are grateful to Commissioner Richard Corcoran and every state Board of Education member for voting in favor of students today.

“We will continue working with state leaders, families, educators and policymakers to ensure every child in Florida has unrestricted access to high-quality learning options.”
