Students in Florida’s Military Families Will Receive Extra Support

Statement from James Mosteller, Senior Legislative Affairs Associate for the Foundation for Florida’s Future, on the new “Purple Star Campus Program” to help students and military families. Governor Ron DeSantis signed this important legislation today.

“Students in military families typically attend up to a dozen different schools during their K-12 years.

“This program will encourage schools to take those extra steps that ensure those students receive the best possible transition to adjust to minimize learning disruptions.

“Thank you, Representatives Andrew Learned and Patt Maney and Senator Tom Wright for supporting military families and their children.”

House Bill 429:

• Requires the Florida Department of Education to establish a Purple Star Campus Program identifying schools that proactively support military-connected children and families, including public schools, charter schools and schools participating in Florida educational choice scholarship programs.
• Provides schools that designate staff and support programs for new students from military families with the Purple Star Campus designation, reaffirming Florida’s role as one of the best places to live and learn for military families.
