Statement on the Senate Passage of House Bill 549

Tallahassee, Fla. –The Foundation for Florida’s Future issued the following statement today on the passage of House Bill 549 by the Florida Senate.

“Today’s unanimous passage of House Bill 549 moves Florida closer to theimportant goal of giving teachers more time to teach and students more timeto learn. We commend Senator Anitere Flores, Senator Kelli Stargel, Representative Manny Diaz,Jr. and Representative Randy Fine for championing this important piece of legislation," said Debbie Mortham, Foundation for Florida’s Future Legislative Director.

"This bill also ensures that the results from statewide assessments provideteachers and parents with timely, valuable information they can use to helptheir students in future grades and classes." 

The legislation would give teachers more time to teach by moving statewideassessments to the end of the school year. The bill also increasestransparency by providing teachers and parents with easy-to-understand andactionable student score reports, and it ensures teachers receive timelyresults from local assessments to help inform classroom instruction.

The legislation now moves back to the House for consideration.

In surveys of more than 400 Florida K-12 public educators and 400 Florida parents,respondents overwhelmingly agreed with moving statewide assessments to thelast three weeks of the school year and providing parents and teachers witheasy-to-understand student score reports.
