Monday, June 13, 2011

Tallahassee, FL – The Foundation for Florida’s Future released Florida’s 2011 Education Report Card today. The Foundation’s annual report card grades Florida’s Representatives and Senators on their efforts to improve the quality of education in the Sunshine State.  This year, the Foundation recognizes eleven legislators for their leadership to improve the quality of education for Sunshine State students. Members of the 2011 Honor Roll include Senate President Mike Haridopolos, House Speaker Dean Cannon, Senators JD Alexander, Anitere Flores, Gary Siplin, John Thrasher and Stephen Wise and Representatives Michael Bileca, Erik Fresen, Kelli Stargel and Leonard Bembry.

“2011 is the year of the student,” said Jeb Bush, Governor of Florida from 1999-2007 and Chairman of the Foundation for Florida’s Future. “By passing a comprehensive set of reforms that modernize the teaching profession, expand educational choice and provide every student access to a customized education while continuing to fund proven programs that incentivize and reward student achievement, legislative leaders have continued to foster the simple yet powerful belief that all students can learn.  Thanks to a decade of dedicated leadership in the Florida Legislature, education in the Sunshine State has gone from the bottom in the nation to a national model for a quality education.”

Patricia Levesque, Executive Director of the Foundation for Florida’s Future, added: “This session, our Senate and House of Representatives passed bills to modernize the teaching profession to ensure quality and recognition, transform education with technology and empower Florida’s families with more choices through charter schools and scholarship programs. Because of the bold, innovative steps of our lawmakers, more of Florida’s students will have access to the quality, customized education they deserve.”

Education in Florida has dramatically improved during the past decade, but our work is far from finished. The Foundation looks forward to continuing to work with members of the Florida Legislature in future sessions to continue our success. Click here to view Florida’s 2011 Education Report Card.
